Bai Que Temple, the former residence of Guanyin Bodhisattva before her enlightenment, is located at the eastern foot of Xian Ren Ridge on Taohua Island, Putuo District, about 400 meters from the coast of Ta Wan Golden Sand. It is recorded that King Miaozhuang, eager for his daughter’s return, repeatedly summoned her to no avail. In a fit of anger, he ordered the temple to be set on fire. Princess Miaoshan was guided by a white sparrow and escaped the flames in the rear hall. She bit her fingers until they bled, and by spraying her blood as rain, she extinguished the fire, thus narrowly escaping disaster. She later cultivated and achieved enlightenment, becoming the compassionate Guanyin Bodhisattva. The temple is open all year round from 7:00 to 17:00.
