Nian Shan Yunshang Terraced Fields Scenic Area

Nian Shan Yunshang Terraced Fields Scenic Area is located in Nianshan Village, Xingxi Township, Zhenghe County, Fujian Province, 11 kilometers away from the city center. In the fifth year of the Qianfu period during the reign of Emperor Xizong of Tang Dynasty (878 AD), Huang Chao’s rebel army entered Zhenghe and camped in Nian Shan, hence the name. Nian Shan boasts the elegantly shaped and grandly scaled terraced fields in the East China region. The terraced fields’ scenery changes with the seasons, forming a splendid picture throughout the four seasons. In spring, the terraced fields resemble mirrors, shimmering with light; in summer, they are a lush green, a feast for the eyes; in autumn, they resemble a golden ocean, with a bountiful harvest in sight; in winter, they are adorned with fluttering snowflakes, defying the cold. The terraced fields stretch endlessly, winding and meandering, blending with the mist among the mountains, changing amidst the blue sky and white clouds, as if in a fairyland.
Nian Shan has a profound agricultural culture, with a thousand years of highland farming leaving behind the pristine village landscape of ‘ancient trees beside, yellow mud walls, and winding alleys with people.’ The terraced fields in Nian Shan are short, with some only one or two meters long, which villagers describe as ‘a frog can leap over three mounds, and a water buffalo can lie down on one mound.’ The longer ones can reach two to three hundred meters, with some fields spanning several mountain pits, and there is a local saying, ‘Get up early to transplant seedlings, and it takes half a day to plant a row.’ A single mound of Nian Shan’s terraced fields does not form a scene, but when connected, they create a beautiful picture. The opening hours are from November 1st to March 31st, 08:00-17:30; and from April 1st to October 31st, 08:00-17:00.
