The name of Dahongpao Scenic Area originates from the mother tree of Dahongpao within the area, which is considered the top grade among Wuyi Rock teas. It grows in the Jiulongke region of the northern Wuyi Mountains, and only a few of the mother trees remain, making them extremely precious.
The main attractions in the scenic area include Niulan Pit, Yongle Zen Temple, Dahongpao, Sanhua Peak, Leishi Rock, Matou Rock, Wuyuan Cave, and Duxian Rock. The focus is on visiting the Yongle Zen Temple of Mount Wuyi and the legendary divine tea Dahongpao.

To see the Dahongpao mother tree, one must walk a path, with cliffs on the left and tea gardens on the right. Rows of tea plants of various types are present, all of which are rock teas, with Dahongpao being one of them. It is an opportunity to learn about the origins and varieties of Wuyi Rock tea, which is quite enlightening.

The mother tree is on a rock wall and no longer produces tea; even before, the yield was very limited. If you wish to purchase some regular Dahongpao tea, you can do so in the nearby rest area where the bagged Dahongpao tea is very popular and the business is thriving. They also offer tea eggs claimed to be boiled with Dahongpao tea leaves.

Apart from the Dahongpao mother tree, another must-see point in the scenic area is the Yongle Zen Temple. The temple’s architecture is grand, with buildings such as the Maitreya Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Mahavira Hall, Guanyin Hall, Dharma Hall, Storehouse, Dining Hall, Chan Hall, Guest Hall, and Pilgrims’ Building, all aligned along the central axis. The towers are majestic, appearing profound and elegant amidst the trees, and visitors are welcome to stroll around.
