Yao Mo’s Former Residence

Yao Mo’s Former Residence is a residence from the Ming Dynasty. According to the ‘Cixi County Records’, Volume 44, under the section of residences, the Zhiben Hall, located one mile southwest of the county, was the residence of the Minister Yao Mo, originally built by Song Yao Zhen. The Zhiben Hall features large wooden beams, with a main beam structure, child pillars, and eagle-beak style, but the carved parts and brick columns clearly belong to a style after the Qing Dynasty, raising doubts about whether it was rebuilt by later generations (actually a Ming Dynasty reconstruction) using old materials.

Originally, inside the hall (Zhiben Hall), there was a plaque from the 17th year of the Ming Jiajing period, with Minister Yao Mo as the main figure. The back building served as Yao Mo’s study room, which had a Song Dynasty plaque with white background and black characters reading ‘Ti Ying’, and also housed some paintings.
