Located at the entrance of Heshang’ao Village in the west of Fenghua City, Dao Guan Chan Temple is surrounded by mountains and rivers, with flat fields and green fields in between, offering a tranquil and picturesque environment.
The temple’s predecessor was a Daoist temple. According to the ‘Fenghua County Records’ during the Guangxu period: Yuanyuan Daoist Temple, located five miles west of the county, was built by Daoist Zhou Yizhong in the mid-Yuan Dynasty, and is now transformed into a Buddhist nunnery. The Yuanyuan Daoist Temple was destroyed during the Ming Dynasty, and in the Qing Dynasty, the original site was changed into a Buddhist nunnery—this nunnery is known as Dao Guan An, which is the Dao Guan Chan Temple of today. Since the transformation from a temple to a nunnery, the incense at Dao Guan Chan Temple has been thriving.
