Baodai Bridge

Baodai Bridge, also known as Changqiao Bridge, is collectively known as one of the top ten famous bridges in China along with Zhaozhou Bridge and Lugou Bridge. During the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty, Wang Zhongshu, the governor of Suzhou, sold his precious belt to raise funds for the construction of this bridge. The local gentry and scholars were deeply moved by this act and donated generously. The construction of the bridge began. To commemorate Wang’s noble act of donating his belt to build the bridge, people named this bridge Baodai Bridge. The current Baodai Bridge was rebuilt during the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty. There were originally a pair of stone lions at both the northern and southern ends of the bridge. Now, the pair at the northern end is still in good condition, while the pair at the southern end has sunk to the bottom of the river. Open all year round and open 24 hours a day.
