Caiyi Street

The name Caiyi Street originates from the numerous colorful clothing shops that once lined the street. As recorded in the ‘Yangzhou Painted Boat Records’, it was referred to as ‘located behind the Yunsi, where there used to be a clothing bureau. Later, embroidery goods, theatrical costumes, and second-hand clothing shops gathered within the street, hence the name.
To the north of Caiyi Street, there is a row of shops with the charm of the Ming and Qing dynasties, including noodle shops, pastry shops, and old goose delicacies. On the south side of the old street, it appears quite modern, with tea houses, internet cafes, and restaurants adding a fashionable touch to this ancient street. Amid these modern-style buildings and decorations, a brick-carved gateway immediately gives you a sense of historical atmosphere.

At No. 30 Caiyi Street, the Yang family residence, once the home of the late Qing Dynasty’s Guangdong Salt Transport Commissioner Yang Zimu, may be one of the better-preserved old houses on Caiyi Street. The old house of the Yang family, collectively known as ‘Yang’s Residence’, was designated as a municipal protection unit as early as 1962. Today, what best reflects Yang Zimu’s prominent status is the gateway of his residence on Caiyi Street. Despite the passage of time, the tall gateway remains well-preserved. Looking up, one can still clearly see the delicate facial features of the brick-carved ladies, which is considered an existing masterpiece in Yangzhou.
