Canglang Pavilion Kunqu Opera: Six Records of a Floating Life

Six Records of a Floating Life is an autobiographical essay written by Shen Fu, a literary figure from Suzhou during the Qing Dynasty, in the year 1808 during the Jiaqing era. The protagonist, Shen Fu, recounts his life born into a scholarly family by the Canglang Pavilion in the south of Gusu. He first meets his cousin Chen Yun and they fall in love, later marrying and living a life of deep affection and mutual respect. The couple, unbound by worldly conventions, find joy amidst hardship until Chen Yun’s death due to illness. After her passing, Shen Fu wanders away and composes Six Records of a Floating Life to comfort the sorrow of their separation in life and death.
The newly adapted Kunqu Opera, Six Records of a Floating Life, is performed in one of the story’s original settings—the ancient garden of Canglang Pavilion in Suzhou. With an innovative immersive approach, it combines the art of Kunqu Opera, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, with the garden landscape of Canglang Pavilion, a World Cultural Heritage site. It encapsulates the essence of Suzhou’s urban life, interweaving poetry, painting, alleys, flowing water, lotus ponds, and stone bridges, narrating the deep love and shared interests of the couple.
