The predecessor of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is the ‘Former Jin Catholic Church’
It has a history of 140 years
This church is the first church established since the reintroduction of Catholicism in Taiwan and also the birthplace of Catholicism in Taiwan
The church adopts Gothic and Romanesque styles and is ranked NO
1 in the selection of 100 historical buildings in Taiwan
In the 9th year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1859), Father Agustin Cortés, a Spanish missionary, and Father Paul Hong arrived in Taiwan from Takao Port (Kaohsiung Port) to preach
In the extremely xenophobic trend among the people at that time, missionary work was repeatedly hindered
In the following year, they built a makeshift adobe house on the original site of the current church as a missionary base
In 1863, Father Cortés built a church 30 meters wide and 90 meters long with red bricks and old stones mixed with concrete
It was named St
Dominic’s Church and is the first church in Taiwan
Thus, the Qianjin Church became the center of Catholicism in Taiwan and expanded north and south from here
Half a century later, the number of Catholics increased greatly and the church was no longer sufficient
So construction began in 1928 to renovate it
The new church combines Gothic and Romanesque styles
After completion, it was dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, hence the name Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
