The Chongming Dongtan Bird Nature Reserve is located in the core area of Chongming Dongtan at the eastern end of the low alluvial island – Chongming Island, covering an area of approximately 32,600 hectares, which accounts for 7.8% of the total wetland area in Shanghai. The main protected objects are waterfowl and wetland ecosystems. Under the influence of sedimentation from the Yangtze River, vast areas of freshwater to slightly saline marshlands, tidal channels, and intertidal mudflats have been formed. The reserve contains numerous fields, fish ponds, crab ponds, and reed ponds, with lush wetland vegetation and abundant benthic animals. It serves as an excellent stopover and rest station for migratory birds in the Asia-Pacific region and is also an important wintering site for migratory birds. It is one of the few places in the world where wild birds congregate and inhabit. The reserve is open all year round from 09:00 to 15:30, with specific operational status subject to the actual opening conditions on the day.
