Crocodile Hill Scenic Area, also known as Crocodile Hill Park, is located on the western side of Weizhou Island’s Nanwan Bay on Crocodile Ridge, and is the essence of the volcanic geological landscape of the entire Weizhou Island. Here, you can not only see the complete remains of volcanic activities but also take photos with the lighthouse or overlook the entire Nanwan Bay from the promenade, and collect shells in the sea erosion pits after the tide recedes.
The Crocodile Hill Scenic Area includes attractions such as Crocodile Hill Lighthouse, Tangweng Terrace, Volcanic Crater Site, Dragon Palace Exploration, Turtle Cave, Thief Cave, Hundred Beasts Stirring the Sea, Sea Erosion Arch Bridge, Moon Bay, Coral Sedimentary Rock, Sea Dried Stone Rotten, and Moon Square. There are also geological wonders such as volcanic bomb impact craters, ancient tree fossils, Water Curtain Cave, Sea Erosion Pillar, and Sea Erosion Pier. It takes about 3 hours to tour the entire scenic area. From the ticket gate to the scenic area, it takes about 15 minutes on foot, or you can take a sightseeing vehicle to the Crocodile Hill Lighthouse. From the lighthouse, follow the wooden stairs to the bottom of the hill to see the Crocodile Hill Volcanic Crater Site, which is one of the five volcanic craters on Weizhou Island. The last eruption was 10,000 years ago, and the magma that was ejected at the time covered the elongated coast, forming a brownish-red volcanic rock around it.
Not far away is a sea erosion pit that passes under the walking path, with the right side’s brownish-red rock wall appearing very towering, beginning to erode the cliff’s sea erosion channel, and Turtle Cave is one of them. Thief Cave is a small cave hidden in the shrubs on the rock wall, with a huge sea erosion pit below the cave. If the tide recedes, you can go down and pick up some coral remains. Further ahead, you will see the Sea Erosion Arch Bridge, which is a classic work of sea erosion caves being washed and weathered to the later stage. Near the sea erosion bridge is the dense volcanic bomb area on the island, which is very spectacular. Behind it, Moon Bay is an arc-shaped sea erosion cliff that is tens of meters high and more than a hundred meters wide. The top of the cliff is covered with cacti, and the foot is a desert made up of large areas of coral remains. After passing this place, there is a staircase on the right leading to the scenic area gate, but there is also an attraction called Platform Listening to the Waves ahead, which is a large platform, do not miss it. Especially after the tide recedes, in the large and small pits, you will see live corals and fish shrimps that are too late to retreat, which is very interesting.
