Dongdao Island is located in the Dongdao Atoll of the Xuande Islands in the east of the Xisha Islands of China, about 50 kilometers southeast of Yongxing Island. The island is rectangular and surrounded by sand embankments. The terrain in the middle of the island is low-lying. It has an area of 1.7 square kilometers. The island is composed of a rising reef and coral shell sand body. The island is in a long strip shape, about 2400 meters in length and about 1000 meters in width. The land area is about 1.7 square kilometers. The average altitude of the whole island is only 4-5 meters. The higher part is on the sand embankment, about 8.5 meters. The sand embankment is up to 60 meters wide. At the southern end of the island, there is also a sand spit composed of coarse sand extending on the reef flat. There are two new sandbars on the reef flat on the north side of the sand island. The reef flat where Dongdao Island is located is a long and arc-shaped huge reef flat protruding to the northeast. It is the northeast wing of the Dongdao Atoll and also a well-preserved wing. In the southwest part of the atoll, coral reefs have not yet grown near the water surface but only become reef flats and are deep underwater, such as Khanhan Beach and Binmei Beach. There is a nature reserve at the southernmost tip of China on the island. More than 40 kinds of birds inhabit here and it is known as the ‘Bird Island’. Among them, the white booby is a national second-class protected animal. The trees on Dongdao Island are dense and lush. There is a small freshwater lagoon on the southeast side. In addition, the island is covered with southern tree species – wind-resistant tung trees and caper trees. The superior natural environment attracts many seabirds to inhabit. There are about 60,000 seabirds on the island. There are about 100,000 white boobies, egrets, golden eagles, sea cranes and more than 40 kinds of birds breeding and living here all year round.
