Donghai Island is a flat and expansive large sea island, with an area of 286 square kilometers, ranking fifth in the country. The island has a population of approximately 150,000. Traditionally, people make a living by going fishing at sea and growing dryland crops such as cassava, sweet potato, sugar cane, and peanuts. In recent years, growing north-transported vegetables and breeding lobsters, abalones, prawns, crabs, oysters and precious fish have gradually become the main occupations. Fruits on Donghai Island include bananas, mangoes, and jackfruits. ‘Donghai Muskmelon’ is a local specialty. It is shorter than ordinary muskmelons and resembles an apple. It is also called ‘apple melon’ and is sweet and crisp. ‘Donghai Human Dragon Dance’ is a unique folk art here, which is a long dragon formed by people standing on top of each other.
