Dongshan Ridge Cultural Tourism Area

Dongshan Ridge is located on the outskirts of Wanning City, with an elevation of 184 meters. Although the mountain is not particularly high, it boasts a very unique scenery.

There are peculiar caves and secluded valleys, cliff inscriptions, and it is also a long-standing Buddhist sacred site in Hainan, known as the ‘First Mountain of Hainan’. From the valleys to the ridges of Dongshan Ridge, there are towering cliffs and rocks of various shapes and sizes, some resembling boats, others like eagles, all lifelike.

On the cliffs, there are numerous cliff inscriptions left by ancestors during their visits, some dating back to the Jin Dynasty. The Buddhist culture of Dongshan Ridge has a long history, with temples and nunneries built during the Tang and Song dynasties. Among them, Chaoyin Temple is the most famous, built in memory of the famous Southern Song general Li Gang who resisted the Jin Dynasty. It attracts a constant stream of visitors all year round, with thriving incense.

Visiting Dongshan Ridge can be done by taking a cable car up the mountain. You can first ride to the midpoint of the mountain to appreciate the cliff inscriptions here, and there are also leisure facilities such as tea rooms. Dongshan lamb is a famous local specialty here, which you can also try. Then you can continue to take the cable car up the mountain, and from the summit, you can overlook the scenery.

Must-see tips: 1. There is a temple on the mountain, enter with caution, do not have your fortune told, do not listen to sermons, otherwise the ‘merit’ you have to donate can be a large sum. Remember, the essence of burning incense is ‘sincerity makes it work’! 2. ‘The Three Wonders of Dongshan Ridge’: Longquan Water, Partridge Tea, Dongshan Lamb. Longquan Water is clear and sweet; Partridge Tea has always been known as ‘Ganoderma lucidum’; Dongshan Lamb has black wool, and due to long-term consumption of rare plants such as Partridge Tea, the meat is without any fishy smell, delicious and tasty. 3. You can take the cable car to the top of the mountain and then walk down from the top.
