Prologue ‘Origin of Shanghai’ more than two thousand years ago, Shanghai became the fief of Huang Xie, one of the ‘Four Gentlemen of the Warring States’. He led the people to develop this place from a fishing village in the East China Sea to a land of fish and rice in the south of the Yangtze River. To commemorate the immortal achievements of Huang Xie and the great wisdom of the ancestors of Shanghai, later generations referred to Shanghai as ‘Shen’ and the fishing tool bamboo fence ‘Hu’. The first act ‘Shanghai Jiangnan’ the long-flowing Pu River has nurtured the poetic and picturesque Shanghai Jiangnan for thousands of years. Jiangnan is a painting, misty rain, ink and wash; Jiangnan is a song, Wu dialect soft language, endless human vicissitudes. A boat, an umbrella, a piece of love, this is Shanghai Jiangnan. The second act ‘Shanghai Beach’ ‘The gateway to the river and sea, the metropolis of the southeast.’ In 1843, Shanghai officially opened to foreign trade, and foreign firms flocked in. From then on, the poetic Shanghai Jiangnan became a place where Chinese and foreigners coexist, and the wind and clouds are surging on the Shanghai Beach. The third act ‘Modern Years’ In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanghai was the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures. Let us feel the modern years of the neon-lit night Shanghai, the ten-mile foreign field. The fourth act ‘Awakening Era’ Shanghai is the starting point of the Chinese revolution.
