In the early days, Fengshan County did not have a Confucian temple
In the 23rd year of Kangxi’s reign (1686), the then county magistrate Yang Fangsheng established a Confucian temple in Xinglong Village and Minglun Hall outside the old city of Zuoying, which was the educational hub of Fengshan County at the time
The Confucius Temple and Chongsheng Ancestral Hall in the old city is located within the Old City Primary School, with Lianchi Pond in front, Dagu Mountain and Banping Mountain in the distance, and Turtle and Snake Mountains nearby, making it a treasured land of outstanding people and spirit
Magistrates Song Yongqing and Li Peiyu renovated it in the 43rd year of Kangxi (1704) and the 58th year of Kangxi (1719) respectively
In the 17th year of Qianlong (1752), Magistrate Wu Shiyuan renovated it again
In the 51st year of Qianlong, the Lin Shuangwen Incident caused damage to the old city Confucian temple
Later, the Japanese built ‘Old City Public School’ inside the temple, which is now Old City Primary School, and the original temple appearance was damaged again
Currently, only the ‘Chongsheng Ancestral Hall’ and eleven stone tablets collected from nearby areas remain
Chongsheng Ancestral Hall still retains the ‘three through five melon’ style roof structure of the early Qing Dynasty, with dragon-shaped pottery figurines and Qing Dynasty gourd ridge decorations on the ridge, and an old sandalwood tree that has accompanied Chongsheng Ancestral Hall for over two hundred years
