Genoa Aquarium: A Major Italian Aquarium and Educational Center

The Genoa Aquarium, also known as GenoaAquarium, is one of the largest aquariums in Italy and an important global institution. It was built for the 1992 World Exposition and serves as a hub for education, scientific research, and culture. Officially opened to the public on October 15, 1993, after its complete construction, it was expanded in 1998. The aquarium covers an area of 10,000 square meters and is home to 71 tanks, holding 4 million liters of water in total. These tanks are inhabited by over 600 species of marine animals and plants. Among the diverse marine life, larger species such as sharks, seals, and penguins can be found. Many of the aquarium’s tanks aim to replicate real-world marine environments, including those of the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Amazon River, and Indian Ocean. A notable feature is the Caribbean coral reef. The Genoa Aquarium was designed by architects Renzo Piano and Peter Chermayeff, with its exterior likened to a neatly arranged stack of cargo containers on a ship. The 1998 extension added a 100-meter-long ‘ship’ to the back of the aquarium, connected by a passageway. The walls on the deck of this ‘ship’ are virtual tanks, and visitors can hear the sound of crashing waves as they pass by. The opening hours are from 09:00 to 20:00 from September 1st to 30th, and from 08:30 to 20:00 from July 1st to August 31st. Please refer to the official website for the exact operating hours. Additional preferential policies include free admission for children under 4 years old and for the escorts of disabled persons (proof required).
