The tombs are primarily distributed in the hilly areas on the eastern outskirts of Hepu County, with over 1200 tombs surveyed and numbered, divided into two types: pit tombs and brick-chamber tombs. More than 400 tombs have been excavated, yielding a wealth of artifacts such as bronze lamps, bronze houses, pearls, agate, porcelain, and pottery.

Hepu was once the starting port of the ‘Maritime Silk Road’ during the Han Dynasty, with frequent trade with countries and regions such as Vietnam, Myanmar, India, and Sri Lanka. Due to the prevalence of extravagant burials in the Han Dynasty, the tombs are rich in cultural relics.

The Hepu Han Tombs Museum showcases over 5,000 unearthed artifacts in its exhibition hall, providing an authentic record for the study of ancient Chinese military, art, culture, and economic issues. The museum is divided into two parts: the display of unearthed artifacts from the tombs and the actual display of underground tomb architecture. The unearthed artifacts exhibition hall displays more than 5,000 artifacts. The underground tomb architecture exhibition mainly features the original site protection and relocated restored Eastern Han brick-chamber tombs.

The museum is open all year round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-11:30 and 14:00-16:30; it is closed all day on Mondays. The specific operating status is subject to the actual opening conditions on the day.
