Huguang Rock Scenic Area is located about 19 kilometers southwest of Zhanjiang city, and is a famous Huguang Rock volcanic crater scenic spot. Huguang Rock, which formed approximately 200,000 years ago, is one of the three existing volcanic lakes in China and is also the only maar lake in the world, besides Manderscheid in Germany. The geological features here include coastal landforms, tectonic geological landforms, and various geological relics, with excellent natural scenery.
Huguang Rock is a typical representative of Chinese maar lakes, with sediments at the bottom of the lake that truly record the changes in ancient climate and environment over hundreds of thousands of years, containing abundant information on the changes of tropical and subtropical climate environments. It is hailed by experts as the ‘Natural Annual of Environmental Change’. Surrounded by volcanic walls, the lake water is as clear as a mirror, with steep cliffs around the lake, and the volcanic rock layers are distinct and rhythmic.
Within the park, there are ancient trees that touch the sky, ancient vines entwined, lush vegetation, and a high-density area of negative oxygen ions, which can be called a ‘Natural Oxygen Bar’. Walking by the lake, one feels refreshed and at ease. The park has a long history, and as early as the Sui Dynasty, Buddhist monks built ancient temples such as Lengyan Temple and Baiyi Temple against the rock, and the cliff inscription ‘Huguang Rock’ written by the Prime Minister of the Song Dynasty, Li Gang, is still preserved to this day. About Maar Lakes: Maar lakes are extremely rare types of volcanic lakes, formed by the cooling and sinking of land after a volcanic eruption, resulting in accumulated water. The lake water, due to the seepage from groundwater, has a natural self-purification function, so it will never dry up, regardless of drought or flood.
