Jiayintang

The owner of Jiayintang, Liu Bingnan, is a wealthy businessman who is of the same clan as the famous patriotic poet Liu Yazi. After making a fortune by opening an oil mill in Luxu, he spent 20,000 taels of silver to build this residence in Tongli. The main building of Jiayintang is imitated from the structure of the Ming Dynasty and is commonly known as the ‘Mandarin Hat Hall’. Because the beam head and the oar wood resemble the hat wings of an official hat in the Ming Dynasty, it got its name. The courtyard is tall, spacious, solemn and dignified. The building is richly decorated with carved beams and painted pillars and is quite exquisite. In particular, the centers on both sides of the five-frame beam are engraved with ‘Eight Steeds Picture’, and the two ends of the beam are engraved with ‘Phoenix Piercing Peony’. At the bottom of the beam are engraved with patterns such as ‘Satisfying’ and ‘Sure to be admitted to a higher institution’. The ‘mandarin hat wings’ (i.e., the beam head and oar wood) are engraved with eight relief carvings of operas in ‘Meeting at the Ancient City, Three Heroes Fighting Lu Bu’ and other scenes from ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’, which are vivid and lifelike. Yanqing Tower is the inner residence hall building. It can be seen that the upper fascia on the lintel is engraved with shallow reliefs of ‘Eight Immortals in Concealment’. The center of a piece of jade on the lower fascia is engraved with deep reliefs of the three stars of ‘Fortune, Prosperity and Longevity’. The nameplate is engraved with four big characters of ‘Pass on Virtue and Kindness’. When moving into Yanqing Tower, one can see vivid and lifelike wood carvings of anecdotes of celebrities everywhere. Viewers are all fascinated by them. There is also a Shuixiu Pavilion in the northwest corner of Yanqing Tower. The small pavilion is built by the water and is small and exquisite. Being in it, one can hear the sounds of wind, water and birds nearby. From afar, one can see the small bridges and embankments and the verdant old trees. It is a good place for self-cultivation.
