LeiQiong Haikou Volcano Cluster World Geopark is located in ShiShan Town, Haikou City. The park boasts a diverse range of volcanoes, making it a natural geological museum. From the highest point of the volcanic crater, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Haikou city and Qiongzhou Strait, with enchanting scenery.
Following the park’s trails deeper into the area, one is greeted by lush tropical vegetation along the way, and can witness volcanic remnants such as basalt and lava flows. There is also a Volcano Stoneware Cultural Park, showcasing how villages in the volcanic region over 2000 years ago used volcanic stones to build village gates, stone mills, bowls, basins, tables, and sugarcane processing tools, making one feel as if they have traveled back to the Stone Age.
At the end of the trail lies the Volcano Deity Temple, with a horizontal stele inscribed with ‘Mountains Match Heaven’ and stone tablets engraved with ‘Great King Deity’, ‘Land Deity’, and ‘Yingzhu Deity’. Above the temple, there are 199 steps on the slope, with 99 symbolizing the Double Ninth Festival, and 100 signifying that completing this volcanic crater journey will lead to a long life. Further up is the Ma’anling Volcano Crater, one of the world’s well-preserved extinct volcanic craters, with a sunken center and two protruding peaks to the north and south, called Fenglu Ridge and Baozi Ridge, respectively, resembling a giant saddle, hence the name Ma’anling. Along the mountain trail, there are five viewing points to appreciate the crater’s scenery. Among them, Ma’anling Volcano Crater is the highest point in Haikou, at an altitude of 222.8 meters, offering excellent views on clear days, where many tourists take photos to commemorate their visit. Another noteworthy viewing point is the Qian Zhuque (Viewing Haikou) platform, from which one can gaze at the azure waters and blue skies of Qiongzhou Strait, and see the towering buildings of Haikou city, like a peacock spreading its feathers; to the south, the volcanic clusters covered with tropical rainforests rise and fall, presenting captivating scenery. In addition to viewing the crater from the trail, one can also enter the bottom of the Fenglu Ridge crater, shaped like a giant pot, with the larger area said to accommodate tens of thousands of people. The crater is very cool and rich in vegetation, acting as a natural oxygen bar, and one can also see remnants of volcanic eruptions such as volcanic cinders, lava cakes, and volcanic bombs.
