Lingyan Temple is located at the foot of Shenggui Mountain in the north of Yuyao City, Zhejiang Province. It is about one kilometer away from the urban area. Close to the downtown area but not noisy, and residing in the mortal world but not contaminated. Shenggui Mountain was originally named Shenggui Mountain. According to historical records, Liu Laozhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty pacified Sun En’s rebellion on this mountain. And because Hu Zongxian, the magistrate of Yuyao County during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, returned victorious over Japanese pirates and stationed troops here, it was renamed Shenggui Mountain. Later generations, in commemoration of Hu Zongxian’s achievements in suppressing pirates, carved Hu Gong’s statue in the cliff in 1555 of the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. After Hu Gong’s statue, a large number of Buddha statues were successively carved on the mountain. The statue-making time spans nearly four hundred years from the late Ming Dynasty to modern times. It is a relatively late group of statue groups after the Feilai Peak in Hangzhou and the Yuan and Ming cliff stone carvings. Among them are engraved the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, the standing statue of Amitabha Buddha, the statue of Avalokitesvara, and the statue of Ji Gong holding a broken plantain fan and the statue of Maitreya with a kind face and a big belly. In addition, there are still ‘Ode to Parental Grace’ and poems by Lao Tzu, Zhuang Tzu, Bai Juyi and others on the mountain today. All these historical sites have important historical significance and cultural value. Nowadays, the incense at Lingyan Temple is flourishing day by day, the sea of people is peaceful and harmonious.
