Long Museum West Bund

Located in the heart of the ‘West Bund Cultural Corridor’ along the Xuhui Riverside in Shanghai, the Long Museum West Bund is designed and constructed by the Chinese architect Liu Yichun. Its unique architectural style has quickly turned it into a popular photography destination in Shanghai, attracting countless architectural photographers. Additionally, the museum frequently hosts free niche exhibitions that have garnered much attention. The main building of the museum features a distinctive ‘umbrella arch’ structure, divided into four levels. The ground floor and the first floor are dedicated to the display of contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, installation, and new media. The large-scale cantilevered arch spaces are made of fine-textured fair-faced concrete, visually echoing with the fashionable space of the former BeiPiao Wharf, ‘Dou Lang’, creating a sense of industry and rawness. The basement level is a permanent exhibition space for ancient Chinese art treasures, where the ‘white box’ style rectangular exhibition halls highlight the historical heritage and profoundness of traditional Chinese art. Unlike traditional closed and introverted museums, the Long Museum West Bund is an open and public participatory space. The ground two floors include a riverview restaurant with a broad view, public landscape courtyards, concert halls, cafes, and art stores, while the basement level houses children’s exhibition spaces, a library, an art restoration room, and an art bookstore. The basement two levels have a parking lot with over three hundred parking spaces. All of these features make art more accessible to the public and closely related to their daily leisure life, which is the original intention and wish of Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei, the founders of the museum. From July 27, 2019, to October 13, 2019, the Long Museum (West Bund) will present a solo exhibition of the artist Mark Bradford titled ‘Los Angeles’.
