Luodian Ancient Town

Luodian Town in Baoshan, Shanghai is one of the four famous towns in the northern suburbs. It was named after the merchant Luo Sheng who opened a shop here during the Yuan Dynasty’s Zhiyuan period, leading to the formation of a market. By the early Ming Dynasty, it had become a large town, ranking first among the seven towns and five markets of Jiading County at that time, and was known as the ‘Golden Luodian’. The neat riverbanks are lined with houses featuring gabled roofs, white walls, green tiles, and vermilion doors and windows. The irregularly arranged doors and overhanging eaves create a refreshed riverside street reminiscent of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Walking along the river, after passing the Datong Bridge, a district-level cultural heritage protection unit, one arrives at a narrow street that appears to be an old street. On both sides of the street, there are various small shops under the two-story Ming and Qing buildings, which have also been renovated. Some are equipped with large glass display windows, while others still have carved and openwork wooden doors and windows. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
