From October 23rd to 26th, the Mariinsky Ballet, a world-renowned ballet company, will grace the 23rd China Shanghai International Arts Festival with a showcase of ‘Ballet Essence’ and three performances of the ballet ‘Giselle’. The Mariinsky Ballet, with its full range of principal and solo dancers spanning all age groups, will demonstrate the rich history and strength of the ‘Ballet Aircraft Carrier’ spanning nearly three centuries. On October 25th and 26th, one of the pinnacle works of classical ballet and a milestone in the genre, ‘Giselle’, will be performed with great fanfare. This is one of the most beloved classical ballets, created by the French choreographer Marius Petipa, who is known as the ‘Father of Classical Ballet’, and it premiered in 1877 at the Imperial Theatre of St. Petersburg (the predecessor of the Mariinsky Theatre). As the birthplace of ‘Giselle’, the Mariinsky Ballet possesses a profound historical heritage and an absolutely robust performance strength in this piece. The star-studded cast of principal dancers will use highly complex dance language to deeply portray love, betrayal, and repentance in human nature, bringing an incredibly strong impact to the audience in Shanghai. It is worth mentioning that this play was also the closing performance of the 17th China Shanghai International Arts Festival. After a nine-year absence, this classic ballet is returning to the festival stage and is highly anticipated. The performance will take place on October 25th and 26th, Friday to Saturday, approximately 175 minutes long (including two intermissions).
