Nanxun Ancient Town boasts a long history, with rivers flowing through the town. Known for its wealthy residents since ancient times, Nanxun is adorned with elegant manors of affluent households. Influenced by Western styles that once prevailed here, the town also features a blend of Chinese and Western architecture, exuding nobility and elegance. The town is not vast, and a cursory visit can be completed in about half a day. Boat tours are available for a more immersive experience, with boats typically accommodating up to 8 people. The town has developed nine major scenic spots, mostly private residences and gardens of the town’s former magnates. Given Nanxun’s characteristic of having many ancient wealthy families with extensive estates, and most buildings being serenely beautiful, these nine spots are the main attractions of Nanxun. A tour of Nanxun Ancient Town can start at the Xiaolianzhuang Garden, where the lotus pond and a variety of exotic plants and trees combine with the garden to create an elegant atmosphere, ideal for sightseeing and photography. Adjacent to Xiaolianzhuang is the Jiayetang Library Building, which is both a scenic spot and a library, offering a tranquil and pleasing environment for visitors. After visiting these two attractions, one arrives at a small river where the banks are lined with Nan Dong Street and Nan Xi Street, connected by several small bridges. Walking north along the riverbank, one can find several major scenic spots within the scenic area, including the former residence of Zhang Shiming, Qiu Shu Li, Liu’s ladder number, Guanghui Palace, and the Silk Industry Guild Hall, showcasing both ancient manors and a historical display of the local silk industry’s distinctive features, each with its unique charm, waiting to be explored. Baijianlou and Zhang Jingjiang’s former residence are located across the river at the end of Nan Dong Street. At Baijianlou, one can witness the simple life of the locals every morning and evening, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. There are also exciting cormorant fishing performances on the small river in the middle of the street, which are quite entertaining. For dining and accommodation, there are several handicraft workshops along the street where one can purchase local specialty pastries and snacks. After passing the Silk Industry Guild Hall on Nan Dong Street, one can find Bianmin Road on the right, lined with numerous snack shops, especially noodle shops, where one can taste the distinctive Jiangnan double-fried noodles. If you plan to stay overnight in Nanxun, you can choose a characteristic inn near Baijianlou. The inns are built along the river on the east side of Baijianlou, exuding a simple and elegant charm. However, the accommodation prices in the ancient town are slightly higher. For more affordable options, one can walk a few minutes to Tai’an Road or Tongxin Road nearby, where there are several hotels offering more budget-friendly rates.
