Our Lady of Carmo Church

Our Lady of Carmo Church is located on the hill facing the road loop in Taipa Village, connected to multiple roads. Following the Fai Nang Road and climbing up the stone steps, you will see it — a simple and rustic three-story building with beige exterior walls. The church blends harmoniously with the surrounding gardens and houses that exude a strong European style, making it a popular spot for Macau residents to hold weddings and sightseeing outings. It is the only Catholic church in Taipa, built in 1885 to facilitate the religious activities of local Catholics and to symbolize the arrival of the Portuguese in Taipa. The church features a small bell tower at the top, with a choir platform below. The tall windows on the sides of the church allow light to filter in, making the interior bright and clean. The main altar in the middle houses the statue of Our Lady of Carmo, and there are two side altars, with Jesus on the left and Saint Seraphim on the right. In the small chapel to the left of the church entrance, there is also a statue of Our Lady of Carmo. The church faces the sea with beautiful scenery, and in front of the church, there is a park with plants, stone pavilions, stone benches, and a stone cross. If you happen to visit on a Sunday after the church service, you can see many believers chatting in the square. The environment here is quiet and elegant, suitable for cultivating one’s mind and temperament. The church is open all year round from 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-18:00. The spacious hall can accommodate over 200 believers attending the ceremony at the same time, and it is said that the statue of the Virgin Mary on the altar was transported from Europe. The church faces the sea with beautiful scenery and is a good place for many people to take a walk in the summer.
