Located south of the Humble Administrator’s Garden, the Pingjiang Road Historical District has a history of over 2,500 years and is one of the well-preserved ancient neighborhoods. It is just a lane away from the bustling Guanqian Street to the west, yet it exudes a tranquil and antique charm distinct from its neighbor. Strolling around and enjoying the architecture and local snacks here is a delightful experience. The district centers around Pingjiang Road, with lanes such as Xuanqiao Alley, Daru Alley, Weidaoguan Front, Zhongzhangjia Alley, and Daxin Bridge Alley to the east and west, with the eastern side notably retaining several water lanes. The district features a harmonious blend of land and water, with rivers and streets side by side, showcasing the characteristics of a Jiangnan water town. The old appearance of the streets and alleys has been preserved, even the renovated bars, souvenir shops, and cafes are unassuming and appear residential. You can closely observe the old houses here, with white walls, gray tiles, and wooden doors and windows, exuding a simple yet charming elegance. The bridges in the district also have their unique features, with the drum stones at both ends of the bridge railings, cloud-patterned stone pillars, and carved panels depicting dragons playing with pearls, bamboo, and flowers, all very exquisite. The district also houses the Kunqu Opera Museum and the Pingtan Museum, where you can enjoy wonderful performances. To the east of the district lies the Couple’s Garden, and to the west is the Lion Grove Garden, both worth a visit. Additionally, you can take a boat tour of the Pingjiang River from the water terminal, and in the evening, the lights shining on the small bridges, flowing water, and ancient houses create an especially enchanting scene. The historical district is home to many interesting shops frequented by young artists, such as ‘Cat’s Sky City,’ a bookstore full of petty bourgeoisie atmosphere, bustling with people sending ‘postcards to the future.’ There are also small flower shops, Suzhou-style clothing stores, and more, each with its own distinctive features. Of course, there are also many delicious foods worth tasting in this district. It is open all day from January 1st to December 31st, with two boat tours daily, one at 10:00 AM and another at 2:00 PM (ticket exchange stops half an hour before departure).
