Chuihong Bridge was first built in the eighth year of Qingli in the Northern Song Dynasty (1048 AD). It was originally a wooden bridge. In the first year of Deyou (1275 AD), it was destroyed in the chaos of war. In the same year, it was rebuilt with 85 spans. In the eighth year of Dade in the Yuan Dynasty (1304 AD), it was expanded to 99 spans. Soon after, more than 50 zhang of the bridge collapsed and was blocked. It was not until the second year of Taiding (1325 AD) that Zhang Xianzu, the magistrate at that time, replaced wood with stone and rebuilt it into an arch bridge with connected arches. The whole bridge was built with white stones, more than 500 meters long and with 72 spans. According to historical records, at that time, Chuihong Bridge rose and fell three times, forming a semicircle like shape. It was long like a hanging rainbow, hence its name.
