Located in the heart of Shanghai, the Shanghai Cultural Plaza is bordered by Maoming South Road to the east, Shaanxi South Road to the west, Fuxing Middle Road to the north, and Yongjia Road to the south, covering an area of 47,639 square meters and a construction area of 64,476.4 square meters. Initially built in 1952 from the former Yiyuan Greyhound Racing Track, it has always played a significant role in the social and cultural life of the people of Shanghai, and is one of the important centers for mass political and cultural activities in the city. Since its reconstruction and opening in 2011, the Shanghai Cultural Plaza has been committed to integrating modern performances, art exhibitions, and cultural experiences. With musical performances as the main theme and various fashionable classic arts as the auxiliary line, the Plaza envisions itself as a ‘Cultural Paradise, Where Dreams Blossom’. It strives to nurture and build an artistic stage for the development of musicals, leading the cultural and leisure industry and creating a well-known cultural ecological landmark for citizens. Over the past eleven years, the Cultural Plaza has hosted more than 2,700 performances, attracting over 3 million viewers and nearly 2,300 public welfare activities, with cumulative participation exceeding 400,000 people. It has successfully introduced classic plays such as ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Elisabeth’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Mozart Rock’, and ‘Notre Dame de Paris’, and produced several Chinese versions of musicals like ‘My Bucket List’, ‘Rachmaninoff’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and ‘Fan Letters’. It has also pioneered the original musical incubation program in China, presenting original musicals like ‘The Last Emperor of Southern Tang’, ‘Life and Death Lottery’, and ‘Sorry, I Forgot’, with tours across the country. While striving to achieve the development goal of ‘Creating a Landmark Public Cultural and Art Center in Shanghai’, as a professional platform for musicals, it continuously explores the role of industry integrator, holding the ‘Performing Arts World – Shanghai International Musical Festival’ annually, gathering industry, academia, and research resources, supporting outstanding original works, and enhancing the audience base of the musical industry. Currently, the Cultural Plaza features a main theater with three tiers of 1,949 seats, a stage opening width of 20 meters and a height of 11.5 meters, and an orchestra pit equipped with various stage mechanical devices with functions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, and rotating. It is the first professional theater in China to position itself with musicals as its genre. The opening hours vary according to the performance times. Parking facilities are available at Gate No. 7 with a reference price of 15 yuan per hour. The address is 225 Shaanxi South Road.
