Shanghai Museum

The Shanghai Museum houses over 120,000 exquisite artifacts, showcasing a rich collection of historical relics from various dynasties. Particularly notable are the ancient bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, and paintings. Among these treasures are the Western Zhou Da Ke Ding, the Spring and Autumn period Zi Zhong Jiang Pan, the Tang Dynasty’s Gaoyi Tu, and the Eastern Jin Dynasty Wang Xianzhi’s Yatou Wan Tie, all of which are nationally renowned museum pieces. The Ancient Chinese Bronzes section of the Shanghai Museum features the museum’s prized possession, the Western Zhou Da Ke Ding, alongside other treasures such as the Spring and Autumn Xi Zun and Zi Zhong Jiang Pan. The Ancient Ceramics section boasts a collection including the Shang Dynasty’s original celadon zun, the Tang Yue Kiln’s begonia-style large bowl, a set of Song Ru Kiln plates, and a Yuan Jingdezhen Kiln blue and white lotus vase, among other exquisite pieces. The Ancient Calligraphy collection includes masterpieces from Wang Xizhi’s Shangyu Tie, Wang Xianzhi’s Yatou Wan Tie, and the Song Huizong’s slender gold Qian Zi Wen. The Ancient Paintings section features rare treasures such as Tang Sun Wei’s Gaoyi Tu, the Five Dynasties Dong Yuan’s Xiashan Tu Juan, and Song Liang Kai’s Ba Gao Seng Gu Shi Tu Juan. Additionally, the museum features a Sculpture Hall dedicated to ancient Buddhist sculptures, a Minority Crafts Hall showcasing traditional handicrafts from ethnic minorities, a Jade Hall presenting jade artifacts from various Chinese dynasties, and a Ming and Qing Furniture Hall reflecting the style of furniture from those periods. The Seals and Coins Halls also rank among the largest collections in China. The Shanghai Museum regularly hosts special exhibitions, sometimes with admission fees, featuring a variety of domestic and international cultural relics, artworks, and calligraphy and paintings. The museum is open from 09:00 to 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Mondays, and extended hours to 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays in November, as well as from November 5th to 10th (last entry at 19:00), with a daily limit of 8,000 visitors for the daytime sessions.
The museum exhibits accept reservations for 3,000 visitors per night, with time-slot based appointments.
