The Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art is located on the north bank of the Huangpu River in Huangpu District, facing the China Art Museum across the river. The museum primarily exhibits a variety of contemporary art pieces and frequently hosts different thematic exhibitions. Here, you can appreciate various abstract art works or new concept art displays, which can greatly inspire your aesthetic sense and imagination. The museum’s predecessor was the Nanshi Power Plant, which was established in 1897. Its 165-meter reinforced concrete chimney stands tall and can be seen from a distance, giving the building a distinct factory appearance. Inside the museum, the spacious and bright space features rugged steel structure beams, with clear traces of the factory conversion, giving it a strong sense of history. The exhibition halls are mainly located on the first to fifth floors of the museum, with a café on the fifth floor, and the Cloud Restaurant on the seventh floor offers full meals. The museum’s exhibits are usually not fixed and often change with different thematic exhibitions, such as the Art Design Exhibition, Portraits of the Era, Swiss Landscape Design, Cartier Time Art Exhibition, and many more. Therefore, when you visit again after some time, you may see completely different exhibits than the last time. The Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art is also the main venue for the Shanghai Biennale, a biennial art exhibition that is one of the more influential art events in Asia.
