Heading north from Tongji Bridge and going down the stone steps, a towering city tower stands in front. This is the Shunjiang Tower, commonly known as the Drum Tower. The Shunjiang Tower is built on a city wall five meters high. This section of the city wall is currently the only remaining section of the ancient city wall in Yuyao and is extremely precious. The tower and the city wall are integrated, further highlighting the primitive historical features of Yuyao. The Shunjiang Tower was initially built in 1335, the first year of Zhiyuan in the Yuan Dynasty. It is named after the Shun River. A clepsydra is set up upstairs for timekeeping. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was destroyed and rebuilt many times. In the eleventh year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, after reconstruction, a large bronze bell was recast and used for timekeeping and fire alarm. As a city tower, the Shunjiang Tower guards the strategic location of Yuyao City. It is an important gateway of ancient Yuyao City and has a considerable strategic position. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, in the struggle of Yuyao people to defend their homes and resist the invasion of Japanese pirates, bells, drums, and cloud-shaped plaques were set up on the Shunjiang Tower and played a huge role in the battle. The Shunjiang Tower is a prominent example of the official architectural style among the ancient buildings in Yuyao and has important architectural scientific value. Tongji Bridge and Shunjiang Tower are outstanding representatives of ancient architecture in Yuyao, reflecting the outstanding architectural wisdom and ability of ancient craftsmen in Yuyao. Since ancient times, they have always been the landmark buildings of the ancient city of Yuyao and are the historical witnesses and historical emblems of Yuyao City. In April 1995, Tongji Bridge and Shunjiang Tower were named as one of the first batch of patriotic education bases in Yuyao City by the CPC Yuyao Municipal Committee and Yuyao Municipal People’s Government.
