Taiji Lake Village

Taiji Lake Village, also known as Lake Village, is located approximately 17 kilometers northeast of Jixi County. Hu Yunlong, a Southern Song Dynasty Longchuan Privy Councilor, was buried here, and his Hu descendants formed a village to guard the tomb. Later, the Zhang family surpassed the Hu family and became the major surname in the village. The Yuanxi River flows through the village in an inverse “S” shape, with the village on the west bank and farmland on the east bank, making the entire village resemble a Tai Chi diagram. In April, one can admire the rapeseed flowers blooming in the fields. Compared to other Hui-style ancient villages, Taiji Lake Village is not large, but it wins with its numerous brick carvings on the gateways. Although Taiji Lake Village belongs to Xuancheng City, it is farther from Xuancheng, about 140 kilometers away, and closer to Huangshan City, about 70 kilometers away, making it more convenient to start from Huangshan City. The main entrance of the village is on the south side, and before entering, one can see the two water gates, Lion and Elephant Gate and Sun and Moon Gate, in sequence. The Lion and Elephant Gate features two mountains flanking the water in the middle, offering a beautiful view.

The first important site to visit after entering the village is the Zhang Family Ancestral Hall, which was built during the Ming Dynasty. The wall in front of the hall is painted with a creature resembling a qilin called ‘Tan’. The wood carvings inside the hall are exquisite, and one can also see props related to local festivals and swinging platforms, such as a model of a child suspended in the air on a square platform, three-barreled guns used as ceremonial cannons, a Ming Dynasty Guanyin platform, and a coiled dragon incense pavilion. The coiled dragon incense pavilion is particularly worth seeing, with six lifelike coiled dragons on the pavilion that can be拆卸ed.

Leaving the ancestral hall, one arrives at the Ming Dynasty water street, Yinquan Street, where the stream flows along the street, and black-and-white buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are built along the street. Further ahead, there is a small alley that concentrates seven brick-carved gateways. The hollow-out carvings on the thin layer of bricks have a strong sense of three-dimensionality, and the details seem to break at the slightest touch, making them particularly beautiful.

Walking towards the end of the village, under the Dragon Hidden Pavilion, there is a well. The house next to the pavilion has a history of more than 800 years and was the place where the Hu family tomb guards lived at that time. Behind the pavilion is the Song Dynasty Longchuan Hu Family Imperial Tomb. On the imperial tomb, there is a thousand-year-old bitter persimmon tree that is difficult for seven or eight people to embrace. Standing under the tree and looking into the distance to the south, one can see the Qigu Mountain, which resembles a sleeping Buddha. The Medicine King Temple is not far from the tomb, and it has more characteristics of Hui-style residential buildings than a temple. There are no dining or accommodation places in Taiji Lake Village, as it can be quickly toured, and there is no need for food and accommodation. Generally, tourists will visit the Longchuan Scenic Area (11 kilometers from Jixi County), Hu Zongxian’s Mansion (200 meters from Longchuan), and Taiji Lake Village (6 kilometers from Longchuan) together. Longchuan has convenient dining and accommodation, so one can first visit Taiji Lake Village and stay in Longchuan, or simply stay in Jixi County.

Must-see tips:

1. Tour guides can be hired at the main entrance on the south side of Taiji Lake Village. A tour guide costs 30 yuan for one session.

2. The Taiji diagram layout of Taiji Lake Village can only be seen by looking down from a commanding height. The hillside behind the ticket office on the south side of the village is such a commanding height. However, because the mountain paths around the village are not very easy to walk on, it is not very recommended to climb. When you open Google Maps on your computer and search for Taiji Lake Village, and then select “Satellite Image”, you can also see the Taiji diagram layout.
