Chihkan Tower, also known as ‘Red Hair Tower’, has withstood over 300 years of transformation and can be considered a witness to the historical changes of Tainan
Its architectural features have evolved from Dutch-style fortresses to Chinese architecture
Today, it is not only an outdoor museum but also a famous historical site and spiritual symbol of Tainan
The complex of Chihkan Tower includes the Temple of the Sea God to the south and the Wenchang Pavilion to the north, both of which are traditional Chinese buildings with red tiles and upturned eaves
The pavilion with the ‘Chihkan Tower’ plaque is the Temple of the Sea God, which houses historical and cultural materials related to Chihkan Tower
Behind the temple, there are two door openings shaped like vases, symbolizing ‘safety’
After visiting the Temple of the Sea God, one comes to the Wenchang Pavilion to the north, a pavilion built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, now dedicated to Wenchang Di and on the second floor, Kuixingye, one of the Five Wenchang, the god of examinations in the imperial examination era
Behind the Wenchang Pavilion, one finds the remains of the Fort Provintia, a historically valuable relic within Chihkan Tower
Surrounding Chihkan Tower are other ancient sites such as the Ceremonial Martial Temple and the Great Tianhou Temple, together forming a museum-like ancient city that can be visited together
The commercial area around Chihkan Tower is bustling, and the food is equally impressive
You can enjoy winter melon tea at Yifeng or try the bowl of Dan-Zai noodles, Tainan’s specialty braised pork rice, oolong noodles, and shrimp rice at Du Xiaoyue
Chihkan Tower is open all year round from 08:30 to 21:30, with specific business hours subject to the daily opening status
