The Waitanyuan

The Waitanyuan is located at No. 33, Zhongshan East 1st Road. It is the location of the former British Consulate General in Shanghai. It includes the main building of the former British Consulate (now No. 1 Waitanyuan) and the auxiliary building of the former British Consulate. The main building of the British Consulate was built in 1849 (the 29th year of Daoguang). The existing well-preserved building is the one rebuilt in 1872 (the 11th year of Tongzhi). The facade is in the British Renaissance style. In front of the house is a typical English garden. The roof is a western-style four-slope roof, but Chinese small black tiles are laid locally. The architectural style of the auxiliary building is more gorgeous than that of the main building, and the facade and interior decoration have been increased. Opening hours: open all day throughout the year.
