Three Bridges

The three bridges refer to Taiping Bridge, Jili Bridge and Changqing Bridge. The three bridges are three stone bridges in Tongli. Since ancient times, there has been a custom of ‘walking on three bridges’ in Tongli. Whenever there is a wedding or celebration, local people will walk on the three bridges in groups and chant ‘Taiping, Jili, Changqing’ for good fortune. There are also folk proverbs about people of different ages ‘walking on three bridges’: Little kids, walk on three bridges, be smart in reading and have good grades every year. (‘Little kids’ refers to children); Young girls, walk on three bridges, be naturally beautiful and become slimmer and slimmer; Young men, walk on three bridges, have a meteoric rise and have a boundless future; Elderly people, walk on three bridges, have white hair and a childlike complexion and live as long as the Nanshan Mountain; The bride and groom walk on three bridges, have a mutual understanding and grow old together. The three bridges are in a ‘pin’ shape and span at the intersection of three rivers, naturally forming a circular street. Along the river are bluestone revetments. The weeping willows and privet shrubs on the banks are reflected in the water. There are flower and stone railings on both banks. Boats come and go in the river, in pairs. People come and go on the bridges, and laughter ripples. The scenery is as beautiful as a painting, and people can forget all their worries here. This has become a unique scenery in the ancient town.
