Tian Tan Buddha

The world-renowned Tian Tan Buddha is located at the top of Mount Muk Yueng on Lantau Island, opposite the Po Lin Monastery. This bronze seated Buddha statue stands 34 meters tall, made from 250 tons of bronze and 4 pounds of gold. The statue has a plump and dignified face with long ears reaching the shoulders, and the right hand displays the ‘gesture of fearlessness’, symbolizing the Buddha’s wish to save sentient beings. The statue is named after its base, which is modeled after the base of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Inside the base, there are three exhibition halls connected by a circular staircase, with a ‘Yoga Bell’ hanging in the middle, 2 meters in diameter, engraved with Buddha images and scriptures. The bell is struck 108 times a day to alleviate ‘108 kinds of worries’. To pay homage to the Buddha, you must climb 268 stone steps to reach the statue. The solemn and peaceful Buddha, combined with the picturesque surroundings, provides a tranquil environment for contemplation and relaxation. Inside the memorial hall of the statue’s base, there are relics of the Buddha, which can be visited upon purchasing a ticket. The opening hours are from 10:00 to 17:30 all year round, with specific business status subject to the actual opening conditions on the day.
