Tianchi Temple

Tianchi Temple is located at the foot of Tianchi Mountain Peak in Moganshan, beneath the Tianchi. It was built during the Yuan Zhizun years (1330-1333) by Zen Master Wengxin, who was the founder of the temple. The temple gradually fell into disrepair during the Zhizheng period but was restored and expanded by Zen Master Yuzhi during the Ming Jiajing era. According to records, Yuzhi, also known as Yuequan, was well-versed in scriptures from a young age and left his secular life to become a monk, studying under Yangming at Mount Ji and participating in the teachings of Zen Master Mengju at Jinling Bifeng Temple. Upon returning to Tianchi Temple, he often engaged in discussions on ‘the study of innate knowledge’ and advocated for the unity of Confucianism and Buddhism. Yuzhi was not only well-versed in scriptures but also adept at poetry and prose. To embellish the temple’s surroundings, he listed twelve scenic spots around Tianchi Temple, including Waterfall Springs, Bamboo Grove Path, Moon Viewing Terrace, Half Cloud Pavilion, Stone House Rock, Silent Illumination Pond, Inch Wall Peak, Immortal Cave, Immortal Sawing Board, Reclining Immortal Stone, Lion Lying Hill, and Sword Washing Pond. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the temple’s daily opening conditions.
