Tianxiang is located on a terraced riverbank in the Taroko National Park along the Liwu River, offering a broad terrace with rare plants such as the Taroko euphorbium and Taroko oak. The area is known for its beautiful scenery, including meander potholes and towering cliffs, with spectacular gorge incisions and marble rocks that are truly awe-inspiring. Originally named Tabidou, meaning ‘mountain palm,’ it was home to the indigenous Tayal tribe. The name was changed to Tianxiang in honor of the historical figure Wen Tianxiang when the Cross-Island Highway was built. The Fu Yuan and Mei Yuan parks are the first two parks visitors encounter before entering Tianxiang, filled with plum trees and various flowers. From the Wen Tianxiang Sculpture Garden, one can overlook the entire Tianxiang area. Xiangde Temple is situated on a high terrace on the opposite side of the Liwu River, with a towering golden statue of Ksitigarbha Buddha. The well-maintained floral landscapes within the temple are also notable features. Near Xiangde Temple, the ‘Tianfeng Tower,’ a seven-story pagoda, offers an expansive view of the mountains and waters, making it an excellent spot for sightseeing. The ‘Huoran Pavilion Trail’ is a hiking trail approximately 2 kilometers away from Tianxiang. It is an easy descent from Huoran Pavilion to Tianxiang, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery along the way. The area is open all year round, 24 hours a day. Tianxiang serves as a rest stop for travelers on the Taroko Gorge and the Cross-Island Highway, with service stations providing recreational consultation, road condition inquiries, and interpretive services.
