Xunyang Tower is located on the bank of the Yangtze River outside Jiuhua Gate. In fact, the building itself is not eye-catching. Its fame mainly comes from the stories in ‘Water Margin’ where Song Jiang inscribed a rebellious poem at Xunyang Tower and Li Kui rescued the execution ground. Bai Juyi’s ‘The Song of Pipa’ is also related to this place. These stories not only attracted famous scholars and refined people of all ages to come here to inscribe poems, but now also attract many tourists to come and see its true appearance. In the center of the stage model in the lobby on the first floor, there is a set of porcelain sculptures of the 108 heroes of Liangshan Mountain. They are small, delicate, and lifelike in expression, immediately pulling people’s thoughts into Liangshan Marsh. On the walls on both the east and west sides are murals made of ceramic tiles, telling the plots of ‘Song Jiang chanting a rebellious poem at Xunyang Tower’ and ‘The heroes of Liangshan Mountain rescuing the execution ground’ in ‘Water Margin’. The second floor is still a place to sell wine. In the hall, there is a large bottle of ‘hero wine’, and behind it hangs a portrait of Song Jiang. Standing here and looking at the flowing river while taking a few sips of the ‘Blue Bridge Wind and Moon’ wine that Song Jiang drank back then seems to bring one back to those days. In the east wing room, on the wall hangs the’rebellious poem’ inscribed by Song Jiang. Beside it is a statue of Song Jiang. Looking at the expression on his face, he seems to still be immersed in the complacency of wielding a brush and splashing ink. The last sentence, ‘If one day my lofty aspirations are fulfilled, I dare to laugh at Huang Chao for not being a true man’, is written forcefully. This inscription is naturally by later generations, but it still allows people to feel the heroic spirit of Song Jiang chanting a rebellious poem while drunk at Xunyang Tower. Continuing up, there is a hidden floor between the second and third floors, where famous people’s calligraphy and paintings are exhibited. The third floor is the highest point of the entire tower. There are some square tables inside, restoring the appearance of an ancient restaurant. Many tourists will choose to drink tea and rest here for a while and also experience the leisurely life in an ancient restaurant. What is particularly worth mentioning is that standing on the corridor on the third floor, underfoot is the surging Yangtze River flowing eastward. Across the river is already the territory of Hubei. The Suojiang Tower and Wenfeng Pagoda are also in close proximity. Leaving Xunyang Tower and walking one stop is the Suojiang Tower. Similarly, scenic spots such as Yanshui Pavilion and Tianhua Palace along the river are not too far apart. If there is sufficient time, you can visit them in sequence along the river.
