Zhou Enlai’s Former Residence is a Spanish-style garden villa on Sinan Road, where Zhou Enlai once worked and lived in Shanghai in 1946. The villa is well-preserved, and visitors can still see the original layout of the rooms, as well as furniture and work items that have been replicated in their original forms. During the period of negotiations between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China following the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, this place actually served as the Shanghai office of the Communist Party delegation. Due to the circumstances at the time, it was publicly known as Zhou Enlai’s residence, hence the name ‘Zhou Enlai’s Former Residence’. Nestled among French plane trees, the villa is now covered with ivy, and there is a tranquil backyard garden behind the building, creating a serene environment amidst the bustling city. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the villa. The first floor of the villa features a reception room and Zhou Enlai’s office-cum-bedroom, where he held numerous press conferences for both Chinese and foreign journalists. The second floor serves as the workspace and bedroom for the office’s foreign affairs personnel, displaying items such as radios, English typewriters, and mimeograph machines. The third floor’s central area is a collective dormitory, often used as a temporary residence for comrades traveling from the south and north. The villa’s ground floor also includes a传达室 and a garage, where Zhou Enlai’s used ‘Buick’ sedan (now a replica) is parked. In the garden, there is a lawn where a full-body statue of Premier Zhou Enlai stands. Adjacent to Zhou Enlai’s Former Residence is an annex building, which houses a historical photo exhibition hall, showcasing the background of the establishment of the office and its working scenes in Shanghai. Additionally, this place is not far from the former residences of other famous figures such as Sun Yat-sen and Liu Haisu, which can be reached by a 5-10 minute walk.
