Over the past decades, MONO has continuously challenged and explored the various possibilities of instrumental rock, earning them a reputation as one of the most significant Asian bands. To celebrate their 25th anniversary, MONO will embark on their first-ever Asian tour accompanied by a 12-piece orchestra. Following the success of their new album ‘OATH’, this promises to be an unforgettable performance. What have we done with ‘OATH’? In 2020, the existentialism of the once classic ‘nighttime idle people’ has almost become a topic of daily discussion among everyone. What can we do in our limited lives? What is our purpose? What should we do? Over the past 25 years, MONO has explored themes such as the relationship between light and darkness, hope in the face of disaster, and the duality of life and death. In their 12th album ‘OATH’, they contemplate the time that makes up life and how to fully utilize this time. Steve Albini, a longtime friend, joined us for recording and mixing, making ‘OATH’ begin like a sunrise, accompanied by the slow rise of orchestral and brass sections, allowing the band to be immersed in the atmosphere before the violins join in. Throughout the 71-minute album, MONO spends countless moments contemplating time and life, adding a representative MONO song with a graceful atmosphere and pushing ‘OATH’ to new heights. MONO challenges themselves with an existentialism that resonates with the masses and provides compassionate reflection through the album ‘OATH’, rather than fleeting respite. ‘We live in a vow that has not changed since childhood, listening to the wind sing, we are a part of the universe, we already know what we should do and what is most important in life’ – Takaakira ‘Goto’, MONO.
