Baiyun Temple

Baiyun Temple serves as the headquarters for the Shanghai Taoist Association and the Taoist Culture Research Center. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Taoist priest Xu Zhicheng from Jiading built the Lei Zu Hall by the Dongxing Bridge. In the eighth year of the Guangxu era (1882 AD), the Lei Zu Hall was relocated to its present site. Later, Xu Zhicheng acquired over 8,000 volumes of the Taoist scriptures, known as the ‘Daozang’, leading to the renaming of Lei Zu Hall to ‘Baiyun Temple by the Sea’. The temple is grand in scale and is considered the foremost Taoist temple in Shanghai. It currently preserves several structures, including the Lingxian Palace, Lingxiao Golden Hall, Laojun Hall, and Lei Zu Hall, with seven Ming Dynasty bronze statues that are not seen in other Taoist temples across the country. The treasure of Baiyun Temple, the Ming edition of the ‘Daozang’ scriptures, has been moved to the Shanghai Library for preservation. The temple is open all year round from 08:00 to 16:30, with extended hours on the first and fifteenth of the lunar month from 6:00 to 16:30. Please check the daily opening status for accurate information.
