Chenghuang Temple (Gongyuan Road)

Qingpu Chenghuang Temple is a Taoist temple. As one of the important deities widely worshipped in the ancient Chinese folk religious culture, the City God is often embodied by famous ministers and heroes who have contributed to the local people, and is revered as the guardian deity of the city by both the Chinese folk and Taoist believers. The main hall of Qingpu Chenghuang Temple enshrines the statue of Shen’en, the Lord of Qingpu County in Jiangnan Prefecture, while the rear hall serves as the sleeping palace. The temple’s architectural style belongs to the grand southern style of construction, and currently, the main buildings within the temple consist of the temple square, the main hall, the Yuanchen Hall, the God of Wealth Hall, the Compassion Hall, and the City God Hall. Located in Qingpu, an ancient water town in the western suburbs of Shanghai, Qingpu Chenghuang Temple is an important Taoist place of worship in the Qingpu area. It was originally constructed in the sixth year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, renovated in the eleventh year of the Chongzhen era, expanded in the seventeenth year of the Chongzhen era, and further developed in the tenth year of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty by the county magistrate Qiao Shizu, who advocated for donations to build a spiritual garden to the left, surrounded by pavilions and water, with bright and clear trees, winding paths, fragrant flowers, and green grass, making it a place that feels like spring all year round. In the fifty-second year, the county magistrate Sun Fengming continued to expand and renovate, but it was later abandoned. Now, it has a history of nearly six hundred years. Through the vicissitudes of time and dynastic changes, Qingpu Chenghuang Temple has also experienced its rise and fall. The temple is open all year round from 08:00 to 16:00, and on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month (as well as Taoist festivals), the opening hours are from 05:00 to 16:00. The specific business status is subject to the opening conditions of the day.
