The Chuhuo Scenic Area, located approximately 5 kilometers outside of Hengchun City, is a natural spectacle formed by natural gas stored in the shale layers that seeps out through fissures to the surface and ignites
Around the vents, no grass grows, only mud and yellow soil cover the area, yet tufts of orange flames emerge
During the day, these small flames cannot compete with the brightness of the sun, but as night falls, it is their time to shine
This is ‘Chuhuo,’ which, despite being divided into summer and winter fires, is never extinguished throughout the year
Chuhuo is a must-visit attraction on the Kenting Peninsula
The area has been developed with an additional parking lot and a fence built around the fire vents
Surrounding the site, there is a vast expanse of green grasslands, where water buffalos often come to graze, creating a pastoral scene
Some couples deliberately choose to visit Chuhuo at night, especially during the strong winter monsoon, when the flickering fire shadows, combined with the nearby ancient tombs, add a mysterious and solemn atmosphere
The area is open all year round from 9:00 to 20:00
Please note that visitors should not use the flames for barbecuing
Also, avoid using the roadside vendors’ popcorn for popping over the Chuhuo fire, and it is hoped that all tourists can enjoy the area in a civilized manner
