Coastal Memorial Arch

Constructed in 1919, the Coastal Memorial Arch features a four-pillar, three-gate structure with emerald tiles and soaring eaves. It is adorned with five inscribed plaques reading ‘South Sea Sacred Land’, ‘Together Ascending to the Other Shore’, ‘Treasure Axe Lost in the Mists’, ‘Golden Rope of Enlightenment’, and ‘Turn Back Is the Shore’, which were inscribed by figures of the Beiyang Government such as Li Yuanhong, Xu Shicheng, and Feng Guozhang.

The gate pillars are engraved with couplets: ‘Sacred traces on Mount Jia, all nations’ souls nurtured in joy; Buddha’s light over the island, a thousand years of tides and waves calmed’, ‘Twice a day the tides come and go, listen to their natural rhythm; Amidst thousands of mountains and myriad stones, do not mock their seeming unawareness’, ‘Coming to this mountain, before paying homage to the Universal Gate, one must first purify one’s intentions; Crossing that sea, to reach the other shore, one must turn back early.’
