Hua Ao Island is located in the southern part of Xiangshan, at the mouth of the Sanmen Bay ocean. The island is characterized by its steep peaks, grotesque rocks, and mysterious caves. Particularly impressive are the crystalline stone forests spread along a one-kilometer coastline, which are majestic and spectacular. Various slender and striped stones are densely packed together, orderly arranged, and vary in length and thickness, with some being so thick that two people are needed to embrace them, and some reaching the height of five or six-story buildings; some resemble towering swords, while others look like cranes by the sea, known as the ‘Fairy’s Saw Rock’. Experts have identified that the stone forests of Hua Ao Island are actually the conduits of central volcanic magma from the Late Jurassic period. The four-sided or six-sided stone columns are dense black fine-grained basalt, with surfaces that have turned yellow-brown due to the erosion of seawater and weathering, representing an important primary structure of volcanic rocks. This is a vertical fissure formation created under conditions of uniform cooling and slow contraction after a volcanic eruption, resulting in the unique ‘Sea Stone Forest’ landscape.
