Hualien City God Temple is an ancient temple building in Hualien, originally initiated by local gentry Su Qingxiu for its establishment
The Japanese, in their efforts to promote the Imperial Subject Movement, aimed to dismantle various Shinto shrines, except for those enshrining Zheng Chenggong
Local residents negotiated with the Japanese to protect the temple, welcoming the statue of King Yanping from the Zheng Saint Temple, located on the same street, into the City God Temple for worship
Consequently, the City God Temple was renamed Zheng Saint Temple, although the local people still refer to it as the City God Temple
By 2004, the old temple was reconstructed and revitalized, officially named ‘Hualien City God Temple’
The statue of Zheng Chenggong, the founder of Taiwan, is still enshrined within the temple, co-worshiped with the City God
The temple is open to visitors from 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM all year round
