Leaving the county town of Songyang and heading northwest for 2 kilometers, there is a village called Wujing. Upon entering the village, one can immediately see a group of towering horse-head walls, majestic and imposing, which is the unparalleled wooden carving art palace known as the Songyang Huang Family Compound. The Huang family, after nearly a century of diligent management, became a prominent local family and began to construct two buildings, ‘Mei Lan Xuan’ and ‘Zhu Ju Xuan’, in the backyard during the Tongzhi period. In the Guangxu period, they built a ‘Wu Fu Ji Lou’ in the middle yard, and in 1918, they invested 55,000 silver dollars to build a luxurious ‘Bai Shou Hall’ in the front yard. The ‘Bai Shou Hall’ in the front yard, commonly known as ‘Qi Jian’, is a three-deep seven-opening hall, with a width of 27.6 meters and a depth of 33.8 meters, housing 172 columns in orderly rows. Standing in the ‘Bai Shou Hall’ is like wandering through a long corridor of art. The hall is exquisitely decorated with beams and rafters, all centered around the theme of ‘Shou’, with 200 seal script ‘Shou’ characters on the ox horns and brackets, each with a unique style.
The main part of the backyard is the Mei Lan Zhu Ju Hall. The carvings on the lintels and column bases all revolve around this theme, especially the carvings on the window lattices, which are meticulously detailed and vividly lifelike. Between the window lattices, there are small motifs such as bats, butterflies, fish, pomegranates, and birds, deer, bees, and monkeys, each lifelike and exquisitely crafted. There is also a group of carvings depicting labor scenes on the brackets, including woodcutters, farmers weeding, and fishermen fishing. Opening times are from 08:30 to 18:00 all year round; from 08:30 to 17:00 for preferential policies. Supplementary explanations for preferential policies: 1.
